Raccoon tests positive for canine distemper in Lawrence
Village advisory asks residents to keep pets vaccinated and stay away from wildlife showing signs of illness.
The Village of Lawrence has issued an advisory after recent raccoon sightings, according to 5 Towns Central. A raccoon that was recovered tested negative for rabies but positive for Canine Distemper Virus (CDV), a contagious virus that affects wildlife and domestic pets, dogs especially. The virus is not infectious to humans.
Infected raccoons may seem disoriented or lethargic, may stumble, or may show no fear of people. The advisory asks residents to keep pets indoors and avoid contact with wildlife, to make sure pets' distemper and rabies vaccinations are current, and to supervise young children outdoors. Residents should not approach, touch, feed, or try to capture affected animals.
Sightings on private property should be reported to the Nassau County Department of Health at (516) 227-9663. Sightings on public property go to Village Hall at (516) 239-4600 or info@lawrenceny.gov. After hours, the NCPD 4th Precinct is the contact listed.
