Segan runs on health and safety in 7th Legislative District
Emergency physician Doug Segan is challenging Legislator Howard Kopel, citing public health, affordability and public safety as his priorities.
Dr. Doug Segan, a 71-year-old Woodmere native and longtime emergency medicine physician, is challenging Nassau County Legislator Howard Kopel for the 7th District seat, according to the Nassau Herald. Segan said his medical and legal background would bring a different perspective to county government. He spent 35 years in emergency medicine, at hospitals in Michigan and several Naval facilities, and has taught first-year medical students at Hofstra University's Zucker School of Medicine for a decade.
Segan pointed to 911 staffing as an example of the kind of issue he would raise, saying four minutes on hold can be critical in a cardiac arrest. He said affordability is the concern residents raise most often when he canvasses door to door, and that road conditions, speeding, lighting, potholes and missing sidewalks come up frequently. He also said protecting houses of worship and combating antisemitism and other hate crimes would be priorities, and that he wants to support police and volunteer firefighters.
On development, Segan said he supports what he called smart and careful growth, citing traffic on West Broadway and Broadway and flooding concerns. The Herald's report does not say what specific policies he would propose on these issues, and it does not include a response from Kopel.
