Savers thrift store planned for former King Kullen in Hewlett
Residents split over the second-hand retailer's lease at the 26,895-square-foot Peninsula Boulevard site, which housed the supermarket for 45 years.
Savers, a second-hand merchandise retailer, has leased the 26,895-square-foot property at 1765 Peninsula Blvd. in Hewlett, the former King Kullen supermarket, according to the Nassau Herald. The store is expected to open in the second quarter of 2027, the Herald reported, citing a report about the lease.
King Kullen closed there on May 21 after the company could not negotiate favorable lease renewal terms, the Herald said. The reaction has been mixed. A Herald Facebook post asking for residents' views drew more than 300 comments, many of them from people who wanted another grocery store, with Uncle Giuseppe's Marketplace and an Italian market mentioned most often. Others said an occupied storefront is better than a vacant one.
The source does not say whether any other retailer or grocer is in talks for the site.
