Lisa Vider seeks 9th District Senate seat on health care, affordability and antisemitism
The Hewlett Democrat is challenging Republican State Sen. Patricia Canzoneri-Fitzpatrick for the seat, according to the Nassau Herald.
Lisa Vider, a 48-year-old Hewlett resident, business owner and health care administrator, is challenging Republican State Sen. Patricia Canzoneri-Fitzpatrick for the 9th Senate District seat, the Nassau Herald reported. Vider, a Democrat and an Orthodox Jewish woman, said years of advocating for her community and working in health care led her to run. She said she was frustrated after a meeting with an Albany lawmaker who told her that being in the minority limited what he could accomplish, and she argued the district needs a stronger voice in Albany to bring state resources back to Long Island.
Affordable health care is her central issue. She said the state should make health care easier to understand and less expensive for families, and that it should seek greater competition among insurers and fewer regulations, which she believes drive up costs. She also pointed to the difficulties seniors face navigating the system.
Vider named affordability more broadly as a priority, including relief from property taxes and more state funding for schools, roads, libraries, police and first responders. She also said combating antisemitism and other hate is a major focus, and that education should start with children, including how to recognize and report hateful content online and in schools.
