Lawrence lowers flags to half-staff for Oct. 7 anniversary
Village officials issued a statement marking three years since the 2023 attacks, calling for unity against antisemitism.
The Village of Lawrence marked three years since the Oct. 7, 2023 attacks by lowering its flags to half-staff and issuing a statement to residents, as reported by 5 Towns Central. The statement was signed by Mayor Samuel Nahmias, Deputy Mayor Aaron M. Parnes and Trustees Tammy M. Roz, Aaron Felder and Steven C. Gottesman.
The village said the flags were lowered as a symbol of mourning, remembrance and solidarity. The statement remembered those murdered and the families torn apart, and warned that antisemitism is real, dangerous and must never be tolerated. It said history shows what happens when hatred is ignored or excused, and that silence and indifference are never acceptable.
Officials urged residents to stand together against antisemitism in every form and to put aside petty differences, saying unity is essential. They also asked for prayers for the wounded, for carrying families, for the safety of Israel, and for peace for Jewish people everywhere. The statement ended with "Am Yisrael Chai."
