Lawrence issues weather alert as nor'easter approaches

Village warns of flooding risk from rain, wind, and high tides this weekend.

The Village of Lawrence has issued a weather alert ahead of a nor'easter expected to hit the area this weekend. Forecasts call for up to 3.5 inches of rain, sustained winds around 35 mph with gusts to 50 mph, and high tides tied to the full moon. The combination could cause flooding in low-lying areas, and the village has already called residents who live in flood-prone zones.

In a notice reported by 5 Towns Central, Village Administrator Gerry Castro said the village has coordinated with Nassau County and the Town of Hempstead, and has arranged for HAFTR School to serve as a shelter. High tides are expected around 8:15 p.m. Friday, 8:36 a.m. and 8:53 p.m. Saturday, and 9:13 a.m. Sunday. Residents are advised to move vehicles to higher ground, use village parking lots if needed, charge devices, and secure outdoor furniture.

For outages or downed wires, residents should call PSEG at 800-490-0075 or text OUT to PSEGLI (773454). Assume any downed wire is live and do not approach it. Call 911 in an emergency. The village asks residents to report fallen trees or limbs, where no power lines are present, to info@lawrenceny.gov or 516-239-5149.

What we could not confirm

The source did not specify which streets are flood-prone, when the storm is expected to peak, or the number of residents contacted. It also did not give an estimated duration of the outage impacts.
