Lawrence draws 5,000 for first summer concert spectacular

Music, kosher barbecue and fireworks close the summer at the Yacht & Country Club.

The Village of Lawrence's first Summer Concert Spectacular drew more than 5,000 people to the Lawrence Yacht & Country Club this past Sunday night for music, a complimentary kosher barbecue and fireworks over the water. Mayor Samuel Nahmias said the evening was about bringing neighbors together before summer ended.

Nahmias thanked village employees, including Administrator Gerry Castro, Treasurer Lina Fusco and Facilities Director John Morrison, as well as the Nassau County Police Department's 4th Precinct, for helping organize the event. County Legislator Howard Kopel, a Lawrence resident since 1987, praised the gathering. "I wouldn't live anywhere else," he said, according to the Nassau Herald.

Joey Newcomb, a singer and guitarist from Far Rockaway, said he has been singing professionally for eight years and built his career through word of mouth. "Nobody cares about what the guy next to him looks like," he said. "We're all getting together, loving each other." He said the message was especially fitting before Rosh Hashana.
