Hewlett-Woodmere Little League captures first District 30 Junior League title
The all-star team beat Freeport 7-0 for the program's first district championship in the Williamsport tournament.
The Hewlett-Woodmere Junior League all-star baseball team won its first New York District 30 championship on June 28, beating Freeport 7-0 at Baldwin Park. The title sends the team to the Little League International Junior League tournament. The squad finished 4-1 in district play, with Jonah Brown throwing six shutout innings and Jacob Cohen earning a two-strikeout save.
Manager Henry Cohen of Woodmere praised the players, saying the victory was earned against tough competition. Assistant coach Jason Farber of Hewlett noted that the roster, mostly eighth-graders from the Hebrew Academy of Long Beach, came from Little League rather than year-round travel programs and learned to play as one unit. The team practiced at Hewlett Elementary School and Grant Park, and used cages at Five Towns Mini Golf & Batting Range.
Farber said nerves were high before the first game against Baldwin, but confidence grew quickly. Jacob Cohen said the boys didn't expect much because their opponents were tournament regulars, and the win exceeded their own expectations.
