Brooklyn man charged after combative DWI stop injures two officers in Lawrence
Police say the driver was found asleep at the wheel near Nassau Expressway and Rock Hall Road before he became violent during his arrest.
A 35-year-old Brooklyn man was arrested early Sunday after a DWI stop in Lawrence turned violent, according to 5 Towns Central. Nassau County Fourth Squad detectives said Fourth Precinct officers responded around 5:48 a.m. to a report of a vehicle stopped near the intersection of Nassau Expressway and Rock Hall Road with the driver apparently asleep inside.
Officers found the driver of a red Hyundai Santa Fe and tried to wake him, police said. He became combative and spat at officers, and two officers were hurt during the arrest as he resisted, according to police. Both officers were taken to a hospital for what police described as minor injuries. The driver, identified as Luis, 35, of Bleecker Street, was also taken to a hospital for evaluation and was later found to be intoxicated, police said.
He faces charges including two counts of second degree assault, driving while intoxicated, second degree obstructing governmental administration, resisting arrest, second degree harassment, having open containers of alcohol in a vehicle, and a traffic infraction, according to police. He was scheduled for arraignment Monday at First District Court in Hempstead.
