East Rockaway man indicted in fatal Woodmere crash that killed father driving son to school

An East Rockaway man has been indicted on manslaughter and other charges in a March crash in Woodmere that killed a father who was driving his son to school, Nassau County District Attorney Anne Donnelly announced, according to the Nassau Herald. Brayan Romero Flores, 24, was arraigned May 28 before Judge Howard Sturim on charges including second degree manslaughter, second degree assault, criminally negligent homicide and reckless driving. He pleaded not guilty and was remanded, with a return court date of June 4. He faces up to 15 years in prison if convicted.
Prosecutors said the crash happened around 7:53 a.m. on March 19 near University Place and Branch Boulevard. Michael Kreindler, 39, was driving his 10 year old son to school in a 2023 Tesla Model 3 when Flores, allegedly heading north on Branch Boulevard at high speed in a 2019 Honda Accord, struck the car as Kreindler turned left. Kreindler was taken to Mount Sinai South Nassau Hospital with serious injuries, his son was treated for minor injuries and released, and Flores was also treated and released for minor injuries.
Kreindler stayed on life support until he died of his injuries on April 7, prosecutors said. Data pulled from the Honda's event recorder showed Flores traveling 81 miles per hour one second before impact, more than double the posted limit, and braking only one second before the crash after reaching 99 percent acceleration five seconds earlier, according to the district attorney's office. Dash camera footage allegedly showed Flores running a red light about five minutes before the crash while driving roughly 77 miles per hour. He was arrested May 28 by Nassau County police. The charges remain accusations, and Flores is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
